“This isn’t just a group of different artists exhibiting. These are all my friends. What we had at Goldsmiths’ was unusual we were always discussing ideas, spending time together.”(Ian Davenport))

In the naming of their show “425” the artists have deliberately avoided using as a title an umbrella term - something that by meaning anything at all ultimately means nothing. In doing so they hope to break out of the necessity of adding a ‘theme’ to a group show and therefore freeing themselves from changing their practice to fit with audience expectations.

“425” Refers to the number of days between the artists meeting and the first day of the exhibition. There is no coherent philosophy that ties together the work and the artists have not attempted to fabricate one for the purpose of this exhibition. It is more a modest “this is what we have done”. With interests in textiles, new media, painting and institutional critic the show will invariably be diverse but what is perhaps most interesting is that despite making work separately, through constant discussion with each other all the work to a certain extent is collaborative.

One Response

  1. I saw this exhibition and really enjoyed the styles of the artists very much. The gallery was filled with new and exciting fresh works not ‘labelled’ leaving the viewer to make up their own mind as to its content. I was very impressed by the students work and look forward to seeing the next exhibition by these talented young people.
