The muses, Serendipity and Synchronicity, throw a select little party for Freud, St Sebastian, and… the Marx Brothers — luckily the St John’s Ambulance is in attendance! ‘Twelve Steps to Sainthood’ is a very different exhibition from Charlie Pi. The artist (who is known for baroque oils of beautiful men) here presents pared down collages on fabric-covered card reminiscent of the old oilcloth charts used in his childhood schoolrooms, most appropriate when he uses scraps from fifties books on ‘how to draw and paint’. The works are alternately based on the Oedipus theory, Catholic Saints Day cards, Anatomy books and ‘How to’ manuals, and examine a very personal history, full of puns, both literal and visual.

The exhibition includes some works created by Charlie for a group show in which he created drawings based on the Oedipal point of view for a site-specific installation in a derelict toilet of the Shoreditch Town Hall basement. That exhibition was called ‘Twelve Steps Down,’ this one could have been called ‘Twelve Steps Up’, (but wasn’t).
