Self-taught and exhibiting worldwide, Joanna Mbeke’s works are a magnificent reflection of the influences of her West African background.
A cultural identity that clearly shows the elements of folk, tradition with a distinct contemporary feel.
Brightly patterned folk and traditional art was an everyday visual experience for Mbeke, alongside the music, dances and superstitions that have shaped her culture. Past experiences throughout her travels in Central America and the Caribbean – with special reference to Cuba – have also found comfort and shelter in her work.
Influenced not only by West African folklore and pictorial traditions, the artist shows a keen interest in contemporary aspects of diasporas of African cultures worldwide. Mbeke primarily focuses on the issues of self identity and lost traditions.
The uniqueness of her art is such that each time one looks at her work, the viewer is spontaneously invited to walk right inside to join in the celebration of Africa’s culture, music and life. This vibrant journey stimulates the imagination, excites the senses and reinvigorates the soul.
